Wireless flip phone to make WiFi calls

A lot of phones have popped up over the past year that allow a person to make phone calls over the Internet, provided the person is talking in a place that offers wireless Internet, or WiFi, access. But Santa Clara’s TelTel, in a partnership with D-Link, has put a new spin on that idea, offering a WiFi phone that has neither cords nor cordless “base stations.”

Verizon Wireless is planning to sell over its Get It Now service a BREW application that allows customers to program their TiVo digital video recorders (DVRs) from their mobile phones — effectively turning the handset into an ultra-long-range remote control.

2006 will be year of mobile advertising experimentation

As advertisers and operators seek out the best business model, 2006 will be a year of experimentation for the emerging mobile advertising market. The next five years will see a shift by major brands from simple SMS mobile marketing to more sophisticated multimedia advertising. By 2007, brands will know what works, and mobile advertising will become mainstream by 2008. These are some of the key findings from visiongain’s new report, entitled “Mobile advertising and marketing: Market analysis and forecasts 2006-2011″.

From 2005, when the nascent market garnered $255 million in Europe and the United States, mobile marketing and advertising in these two geographical areas will grow to exceed $1 billion in 2009, according to visiongain.

Wireless: Carving up big market for tiny televisions

Live television on mobile phones is just getting out of the starting blocks, but a battle is already raging over which of the three main competing technologies will become the dominant standard - if any.

But unlike with the competing DVD standards hitting retail shelves this year, consumers will probably not have to worry about making the wrong choice. A single standard will probably be adopted for most geographic areas, with phone makers, broadcasters and mobile carriers in a region agreeing to use the same technologies, according to several industry experts.

To date, Cingular has invested nearly $2 billion in its Georgia network deploying next-generation GSM/GPRS/EDGE technology, preparing for its 3G (UMTS) deployment, integrating two massive networks and improving overall coverage and capacity. The Georgia network spans from the Georgia/Florida border up to and including the markets of Hilton Head to Saint Helena Island continuing to Augusta and Aiken, SC.

Toronto to blanket downtown with wireless access

Computer users in Toronto will be able to connect to the Internet from park benches, buses, or almost anywhere downtown later this year under a plan to turn the central city into a wireless fidelity, or Wi-Fi, zone. A city-owned agency, Toronto Hydro Telecom, will install transmitting and receiving units on light standards in a six-square-kilometer central-city hotspot over the next 10 months, making wireless Internet access available to anyone, anywhere within the zone.

Cingular to deploy RealNetwork wireless TV

Cingular will be deploying Helix Online TV, the wireless video-on-demand service produced by RealNetworks. Real announced Tuesday that Helix will be available in 16 U.S. cities and will offer wireless users access to video clips from such familiar content providers as HBO, Fox Sports and the Weather Channel.
